It just seemed that God had His hand upon this young man from the very start. At age twelve he felt his call to the ministry and began preaching in church and at youth rallies at the age of thirteen. In 1955 at the young age of seventeen, he was appointed to serve as the Sectional Youth Director for section three. An area that spanned from the Grapevine northward to Chowchilla. He would serve the Western District U.P.C.I in this capacity until 1966. During this time he also served the local Hanford church and founding pastor Rev. William H. Garrett as Assistant Pastor.

In 1963 Bro. Cantrell would be elected to his first pastorate in Exeter California. That very same year he would also be asked to serve The Western District U.P.C.I. as Sectional Secretary and Home Missions Director along with continuing his service as Sectional Youth Director.

Then in 1966 God would call him to the North Coast as pastor of the church in Arcata California. He and his family were instrumental in assisting a small church in a total remodel, completion of a parsonage building and setting a solid foundation for future growth.

1969 would again be the year of change as they were elected to fulfill the role as pastor of Mt. Zion Apostolic Church in Goshen California. A work that Elder William H. Garrett had also started in the mid 1940's. It was in this year of 1969 that Bro. Cantrell would first be elected to the Western District U.P.C.I. District Board as Presbyter of the "then" Section 6. It was here in Goshen that they would experience a wonderful revival of souls, baptizing over one hundred people in just one of the five years spent there.

In 1974 Bro. Cantrell would be elected to succeed Bro. Winfred Toole as Secretary of the Western District U.P.C.I.. A position he would faithfully fulfill for thirty years. In this same year of 1974 the Cantrell family would return to the city of Hanford as Bro. Cantrell was elected to succeed Elder William H. Garrett as Pastor of First Pentecostal Church. He has faithfully labored in this capacity to date. In 2001 he was also elected to fulfill the duty of full-time pastor of Mt. Zion Apostolic Church in Goshen where they currently serve as Senior Pastor.
